Residents of New York who want to go to college and are having a hard time thinking of ways to pay for it should consider New York State Scholarships, grants and stipends. Scholarships in New York
NYS Scholarships for Academic Excellence provide up to $1,500 annually for up to five years of undergrad study in the state of New York. Qualified students will have graduated from high school as a New York resident, be prepared to study full time in an approved program of study in a New York State college or university. Each year up to 2,000 of these scholarships are given to the top graduating scholars for each high school and an additional 6,000 scholarships of $500 per year are given to other outstanding graduates in New York high schools.
The National Tourism Association offers the Tourism Cares Scholarship for local New York Chapter students who are enrolled full time at a two year or four year college or university. Eligible students will be residents of the State of New York and entering a second year of a two year program or third year of a four year program, and will maintain a 3.0 grade point average in an undergraduate degree program.
The American Quarter Horse Foundation Scholarship Program offers the James F. and Doris M. Barton Scholarship for members of the Empire State Youth Quarter Horse Association (ESYQHA). Students must be planning to attend a two year or four year degree program at an accredited college or university and maintain a 3.0 grade point average or higher. This is a $5,000 two year scholarship which is selected based upon overall qualifications including academics and other factors.
Margaret Raley New York State Migrant Scholarship is offered to high school seniors who are migrants within New York State and have plans to attend college, university, or some other post-secondary training institution. Recipients are selected based upon educational goals, career goals, participation in community activities, good citizenship, and mobility to overcome the difficulties of being a migrant farmworker. Annual awards are given in the amount of $500 and are to be used toward pursuing a further education. The award is supported through the Gloria and Joseph Mattera National Scholarship Fund for Migrant Children.
Scholarships for Part Time Students in New York
Students who are only able to study part time in the state of New York may be able to get some help through the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC). Eligible students will be enrolled for at least three hours but less than twelve hours per semester at an accredited undergraduate program. Students must be New York state residents and awards are given in amounts of up to $2,000 per year.
Part time TAP funding is given to students of The State University of New York, The City University of New York, or another eligible not-for-profit independent degree granting college in order to help them pursue their part time college education. Students must have earned at least a “C” average with at least 24 credits earned in each of two consecutive semesters, as well as maintaining residency status in New York and charged at least $200 per year tuition. Students will be considered part time status with at least six but less than twelve credit hours per semester, and demonstrate financial need through income limitations based upon dependency status and marital status.
