Scholarships in Oregon
The Oregon Student Access Commission (OSAC) was created to help students pay for college and plan for their educations. One scholarship that this organization oversees is the Ahmad – Sehar Saleha Ahmad and Abrahim Ekramullah Zafar Foundation Scholarship which is for students of Oregon who are attending a public or non-profit college and are majoring in English. Preference will be given to females for this scholarship. A grade point average of 3.5 is required in order to be eligible. If a recipient shows continued financial need and maintains academic standards, the scholarship may be renewable. The amount given and number of awards given each year varies.
The Benjamin Franklin/Edith Green Scholarship is available to students who attended any high school in Oregon and who are planning to attend a four-year Oregon public college or university. This award is based upon financial need, but a grade point average of 3.45 to 3.55 minimum is required from high school graduates who are entering college as freshmen. This is a one time award and is non-renewable. Award amounts vary depending upon available funds and other factors.
W. C. and Pearl Campbell were residents of Oregon who left a scholarship endowment. The awards are available to students who are graduating from high schools in Oregon and are attending college in the state. A minimum qualifying grade point average of 3.85 is necessary and financial need is considered which means the student must file a FAFSA. Undergraduate or graduate students will be considered and this is a one time scholarship so it may not be renewed. A combined SAT of 1220 or more, or an ACT score of 27 or more is required to qualify. Not available for students who are majoring in a field of study related to religion.
Oregon Scholarships for Specific Fields of Study
Students who are pursuing a post graduate degree in medicine, nursing, dentistry, or other health related fields should look into the Clark-Phelps Scholarship Fund sponsored by the Oregon Community Foundation. Eligible students will preferably plan to attend Oregon Health Sciences University, but other Oregon public universities will be considered. Preference is given to students who have graduated from high schools in either Oregon or Alaska. Selection is based upon financial need so students are required to file a FAFSA. Awards are given annually and are renewable only with completion of an annual application.
Music majors, whether voice or instrument, should consider applying for the Conescu-Doolin Music Education Scholarship. This scholarship is available to full time students at four year institutions anywhere in the United States. Awards are given in the amount of $500 and is automatically renewable if academic criteria are met. Students of Multnomah County are given preference but any student from the state of Oregon is eligible. The selection process is based upon financial need so students are required to file a FAFSA. An essay is required with this application, explaining what music means personally to the student.
